Celsius to Fahrenheit in Your Head: Mental Math Tricks That Work

October 17, 2026 · 4 min read

You do not always have a calculator handy. These three tricks turn Celsius into Fahrenheit in your head — from a rough guess in two seconds to the exact answer in ten.

Trick 1: double it and add 30 (fast, close for weather)

Double the Celsius number and add 30. 15 °C → 30 + 30 = 60 °F (exact: 59 °F). Good enough to decide on a jacket; less good for ovens.

Trick 2: double it, take off 10%, add 32 (exact)

Multiplying by 1.8 is the same as doubling and removing a tenth. 25 °C → 50 → 50 − 5 = 45 → 45 + 32 = 77 °F. This gives the exact answer, and most people find it easier than × 1.8.

Trick 3: remember a few anchor points

  • 0 °C = 32 °F (freezing)
  • 10 °C = 50 °F
  • 16 °C ≈ 61 °F and 28 °C ≈ 82 °F (the digits swap!)
  • 20 °C = 68 °F (room)
  • 30 °C = 86 °F (hot day)
  • 37 °C = 98.6 °F (body)
  • 100 °C = 212 °F (boiling)

Every 5 °C is exactly 9 °F, so from an anchor you can step up or down: 25 °C = 68 + 9 = 77 °F.
